In a remarkable feat earlier this year, “2018: Everyone is a Hero” not only made history as the highest-grossing Malayalam film but also rejuvenated the Kerala film industry after the pandemic slump. Today, the Film Federation of India (FFI) unveiled its official selection to represent India in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards.
FFI President Ravi Kottarakara revealed, “Out of the nearly 45 entries we received, 22 movies were shortlisted. Following rigorous deliberation, the selection committee, led by Girish Kasarvalli, singled out ‘2018’ for its powerful portrayal of climate change, global warming, and the disastrous impact of unlawful constructions.”
Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film chronicles the devastating Kerala floods of 2018 and the collective resilience of people from all walks of life who came together to survive the catastrophe and extend help. It stands as a testament to human endurance and compassion.
The ensemble cast includes Tovino Thomas, Indrans, Kunchacko Boban, Aparna Balamurali, and more. Thomas expressed, “Being chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars is truly an incredible recognition for our film… Through the film, we aim to remind everyone that amidst the chaos and destruction, there is always a glimmer of hope, and it’s the human spirit that shines the brightest.”
Among the 22 contenders were films like “Balagam” (Telugu), “The Kerala Story” (Hindi), “12th Fail” (Hindi), “Zwigato” (Hindi), “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani”, “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway” (Hindi), “Vaalvi” (Marathi), “Baaplyok” (Marathi), and “August 16, 1947” (Tamil). Recent and upcoming releases like “Gadar 2” (Hindi), “Ghoomer” (Hindi), “The Vaccine War” (Hindi), and “Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose” (Hindi) were also part of the selection process.
