In Manipur, a car explosion during the ongoing ethnic violence has injured three civilians. The blast took place in Bishnupur’s Kwakta, a heavily affected region, as an SUV was targeted by a planted bomb around 7:30 pm. Eyewitnesses noted the driver abandoning the empty Scorpio car prior to the explosion, caused by an improvised explosive device (IED). Authorities are investigating the incident and have deployed additional security forces.
The injured individuals were swiftly transported to Bishnupur District Hospital, with one person in serious condition. Simultaneously, security forces dismantled an insurgent bunker in Imphal West district. While sporadic firings occurred between rival factions in Manipur’s Imphal East and Imphal West districts, no casualties were reported. Combing operations continue throughout the state.
The violence originated from the Tribal Solidarity March in early May, protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Tensions over Kuki evictions from reserve forest land further aggravated the situation.
The internet ban in Manipur has been extended until Sunday. The Meitei community comprises the majority of the state’s demographics, followed by the Nagas and Kukis. Authorities are actively working towards restoring peace and stability in the region.
