The recent arrest of AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi excise policy case has deepened the political divide in India. While the Congress refrained from an official response, senior leader Abhishek Singhvi termed it a “clearly illegal arrest” and called for unity to combat the alleged misuse of government agencies.
Members of the INDIA bloc, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, condemned Singh’s arrest as “completely illegal” and accused the BJP of targeting regional parties that criticize the government’s policies. RJD MP Manoj Jha stated that Singh’s arrest was orchestrated by entities affiliated with the BJP, suggesting a pattern of targeting opposition leaders.
Leaders from different parties, including K.C. Tyagi of JD(U), Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT), and Mehbooba Mufti, criticized the BJP for using central agencies to intimidate opposition leaders. Sitaram Yechury of the CPM urged the Modi government to cease such practices. Supriya Sule of the NCP raised concerns about an “invisible hand” exploiting central agencies for political purposes.
This arrest has ignited tensions in the Indian political landscape, with opposition parties denouncing what they see as government overreach and misuse of investigative agencies.
