In a dazzling display of Indian fashion, Vir Das stole the spotlight at the International Emmy Awards 2023 held in New York on November 21. The acclaimed comedian not only clinched the prestigious award in the comedy category for his Netflix special ‘Vir Das: Landing’ but also paid a fashionable tribute to India by donning a traditional outfit.
Vir Das opted for an achkan designed by Delhi-based fashion maestro Sahib Singh Bhatia. The exquisite black attire, sourced from the label Amaare, was crafted in a luxurious silk-wool blend, featuring the brand’s signature hand-embroidered glass beads and meticulous pintuck detailing. Bhatia, the Fashion Head and creative director of Amaare, revealed that the outfit drew inspiration from ancient warriors and their protective gear, infusing a unique and powerful element into Vir Das’s ensemble.
The comedian looked dapper in the traditional attire, showcasing a perfect blend of cultural richness and contemporary style. Notably, Vir Das wasn’t the only one celebrating Indian fashion at the International Emmys 2023. Shefali Shah, too, graced the event in a stunning traditional red saree with a golden border, designed by Karan Torani, reminiscent of her iconic National Film Awards appearance over a decade ago.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, Vir Das expressed his joy at winning the Emmy, stating, “This is an Indian Emmy, for India and for Indian comedy, so I am just overwhelmed. I am just very happy, I am very grateful to everyone who got me here from India.” He also highlighted his association with Netflix, the platform that kickstarted his career, expressing gratitude for being surrounded by respected individuals like Shefali Shah during the event.
