Kareena Kapoor Emphasizes Acting Over Appearance, Reflects on Journey from "Refugee" to "Jaane Jaan"

Bollywood luminary Kareena Kapoor Khan recently ventured into the digital realm with her debut in Sujoy Ghosh’s “Jaane Jaan.” In a candid discussion on Film Companion’s Actors’ Adda, Kapoor shed light on her longstanding commitment to prioritize her craft over mere appearance, challenging industry norms and perceptions.

Reflecting on her journey since her debut film, “Refugee,” Kapoor voiced her determination to be recognized primarily as an actor. She expressed, “The industry often confines you to a particular image, emphasizing appearance over talent. However, from the outset of my career, I’ve strived to transcend those boundaries. My aspiration has consistently been to establish myself as an actor first and foremost.”

Kapoor further elaborated on her evolving perspective, asserting her confidence in her appearance while advocating for a deeper appreciation of her skills beyond her looks. She remarked, “While I take pride in my appearance, I urge audiences and the industry alike to see beyond the superficial. From ‘Refugee’ onwards, my goal has been to showcase my versatility as an actor, with stardom being a secondary aspect.”

Joining the conversation, actor Tillotama Shome echoed Kapoor’s sentiments, emphasizing her perception of Kapoor as a distinguished actor rather than merely a “pretty face.” Shome’s perspective reinforced Kapoor’s stance, highlighting the industry’s propensity to pigeonhole female actors based on aesthetics.

Additionally, actor Bobby Deol, reflecting on his collaborations with Kapoor, commended her growth and prowess in the industry. He nostalgically recalled their early days working together and lauded Kapoor’s evolution, acknowledging her dual identity as both a star and a formidable actor.
