Sikh actors Manjot Singh and Amanjot Singh, part of the blockbuster Animal, praised director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for his careful portrayal of Sikh characters, breaking stereotypes prevalent in Bollywood. Sandeep emphasized that Sikhs are not meant for comic roles, reflecting their attitude, nature, and history.
Amanjot shared Sandeep’s belief that Sardars are not suited for comedy due to their nature and history. Vikram Bakshi acknowledged Sandeep’s efforts in breaking stereotypes with serious Sikh fictional characters, deviating from the typical comedic portrayals.
Manjot Singh recalled Sandeep’s instructions during the look test, where the director strictly ordered not to touch his beard. Sandeep envisioned Sikh characters as meant for heroic deeds, emphasizing their significance. Amanjot clarified that a scene where smoke appeared to go on a Sikh character’s face was unintentional and not planned that way.
Despite Animal’s success, some criticized the movie for violence and misogyny. Amanjot highlighted Sandeep’s sensitivity in handling scenes, giving actors freedom and seeking input before each shot.
Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Tripti Dimri, and Rashmika Mandanna, stood among the highest-grossing films of 2023, prompting discussions on its portrayal of violence and gender dynamics.
