In a bid to address the challenges faced by the residents of Manali-Ennore due to an oil spill and ammonia gas leak, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced special measures to enhance safety, health, and livelihood in the region.
Following the oil spill from the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) during the December floods caused by Cyclone Michaung, the area also witnessed an ammonia gas leak from the pipeline of Coromandel International Ltd. These incidents raised environmental and health concerns, prompting the government to take immediate action.
- Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam: A scheme to develop the northern part of Chennai has been announced, focusing on safety, health, and livelihood improvement in Manali-Ennore.
- Pollution Monitoring and Command Centre: A specialized centre will be established equipped with advanced systems and qualified staff to monitor pollution compliance, water quality, and environmental impact. Two flying squads will enhance emergency response capabilities.
- Manali-Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Company (MERRC): A dedicated company will identify and address infrastructure gaps, utilizing funds allocated for urban greening, water body restoration, waste management, pollution control, and social infrastructure development.
- Industry Audits and Skill Development: The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, along with an expert body, will conduct audits of red category industries. The government will provide free training and travel assistance to youths in the region through the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC).
- Legal Action for Gas Leak: The government assures legal action against those responsible for the recent ammonia gas leak in Ennore once the investigation report is received. A technical committee is actively reviewing the incident for appropriate actions.
These initiatives aim to address immediate challenges, promote sustainable development, and safeguard the well-being of Manali-Ennore residents.
