Alia Bhatt graced the 2024 Joy Awards in Riyadh, where she was honored with the honorary entertainment makers award. Styled by Rhea Kapoor, the Bollywood actor made a bold statement for Indian fashion by showcasing an ancient block print technique from Western India in her ensemble.
Wearing a custom blue and red Ajrakh block-print sari adorned with intricate gold embroidery, Alia’s attire highlighted the rich craftsmanship. The Ajrakh, a traditional block print style, traces its roots back to the Indus Valley civilization, particularly the Sindh region in present-day Pakistan. Over time, it found its way to regions like Barmer in Rajasthan and the Kutch region in Gujarat, influenced by the Mughal era.
The sari was complemented by a blue drape in the Ajrakh worn gracefully over her shoulder, and Alia opted for a tube-style blouse to complete the ensemble. Emphasizing the craftsmanship of the sari, she kept her hair and makeup bronzed. The Ajrakh block print involves a meticulous process, starting with kora unbleached cloth and requiring up to 23 steps to reach the final product, with a minimum of 14-16 steps. The technique involves handmade geometrical Ajrakh blocks, vegetable dyes, and prominently features the use of Indigo in the printing process. Ajrakhpur in Gujarat, a small village in the Kutch region, is renowned for preserving and showcasing this ancient craft. Alia Bhatt’s choice to wear this Ajrakh block-print sari not only reflects her sense of style but also contributes to the promotion and recognition of India’s rich textile heritage.
