Bihar's Education Sector Sees Surge in Teacher Resignations

Bihar’s educational realm is currently experiencing unprecedented turbulence, primarily due to the string of resignations among newly appointed teachers. The predominant reason behind this mass exodus is the series of reforms that have been recently implemented.

Unraveling the Reforms

KK Pathak’s leadership at the Bihar Education Department has ushered in several significant reforms. These include:

Extended Teaching Hours: Teachers are now required to be present from 9 am to 5 pm, extending the previous 9 am to 4 pm schedule.

Curtailed Festive Breaks: The holidays during festivals like Rakshabandhan, Teej, Jitiya, Durga Puja, and Chhath have been reduced.

Increased Oversight: The directive mandates schools to undergo at least three inspections weekly.

Teacher Testimonies: The Human Side of Reforms

Aman Gupta’s experience paints a vivid picture of the challenges educators face. Recently appointed at Utkramit Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Biroul village, Darbhanga, Gupta’s decision to resign stems from the inability to balance work commitments with family obligations.

Amit Vikram, representing the Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) Association, voiced concerns over the reforms’ practicality. He emphasized the potential repercussions on both teacher morale and student engagement.

Government’s Perspective: Standing Firm Amidst Criticism

Despite the growing dissent, a senior education department official remains optimistic. Citing positive feedback from various school visits, the official reaffirms the government’s commitment to these reforms.

The unfolding scenario in Bihar’s education sector underscores the challenges and complexities of implementing comprehensive reforms. As the state grapples with these changes, finding a harmonious balance between policy directives and on-ground realities becomes paramount.
