BJP Leads Uttarakhand Bageshwar Bypoll; Congress Faces Hurdles from SP Ally

In the Bageshwar Assembly bypoll, BJP’s Parwati Dass holds a lead of over 2,200 votes against Congress’ Basant Kumar. Dass secured 23,420 votes, surpassing Kumar’s 21,159 votes in the first nine rounds of counting out of the total 14.

The bypoll arises a year after the Uttarakhand Assembly elections, following the unfortunate passing of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass, a four-time consecutive winner. In 2022, he defeated Congress’s Ranjit Das by over 12,000 votes.

This time, BJP nominated Dass’s widow, Parwati, aiming to gain sympathy votes. The Congress faced setbacks with the loss of their candidate Ranjit Das to BJP just weeks before the election. In response, the Congress fielded former AAP candidate Kumar, refraining from naming Ranjit as their official candidate.
