The postponement of the Canadian trade mission to India, scheduled for October, underscores the increasingly tense diplomatic relations between the two countries. This decision comes shortly after a G20 summit meeting in New Delhi, during which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a terse encounter with his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau.
Shanti Cosentino, a spokesperson for Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng, confirmed the postponement, stating, “At this time, we are postponing the upcoming trade mission to India,” as reported by Reuters.
The strained relationship between Canada and India can be partly attributed to Canada’s significant Sikh population, the largest outside of Punjab in India. Several protests and activities related to Sikh separatism have occurred in Canada, which have been a source of concern for India.
These recent developments highlight the importance of diplomacy and communication between nations, particularly when sensitive issues related to diaspora communities and political sentiments come into play. The postponement of the trade mission reflects the need for both countries to address their differences and find common ground for fruitful bilateral relations.
