In the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, several areas in Chennai are grappling with severe waterlogging, leaving thousands of residents stranded without essentials and power. As rescue operations continue, affected locals in areas such as Velachery, Taramani, Pallaikaranai, Perumbakkam, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam, Medipakkam, and Ram Nagar demand immediate assistance, including food, water, and basic necessities.
Challenges Faced by Stranded Residents
Boats have been deployed to rescue the elderly and children stuck in different apartments in the waterlogged stretches. However, severe waterlogging in gated communities has prevented people from leaving their homes, exacerbating drinking water scarcity. The affected areas urgently require essentials, and some of the rescued individuals have specifically requested food.
Impact and Casualties
Cyclone Michaung has left Chennai devastated, with 12 casualties reported in rain-related incidents. Even after 72 hours since the rain stopped, numerous streets in south Chennai remain submerged, creating a dire situation for the stranded residents.
Disruption in Essential Services
Tamil Nadu Minister Manoj Thangaraj reported that Aavin milk supply has been disrupted in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts, adding to the challenges faced by the affected localities.
Government Response
In response to the torrential rainfall and flooding, Chief Minister MK Stalin, along with other state ministers, conducted an on-ground assessment. The Chief Minister credited the stormwater drain projects initiated by the DMK government for mitigating the impact, stating that Chennai escaped a more severe situation.
IMD’s Observation
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that Cyclone Michaung has aided the northeast monsoon, bringing 29% more rain to Chennai this year.
