As the cyclonic storm ‘Miachaung’ approaches, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday on Monday for Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur districts. Essential services, including police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, and medical services, will remain operational.

The weather department issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Chennai, anticipating moderate rain, accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning. Similar weather conditions are expected in isolated places across various districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Late Saturday witnessed sharp spells of rain in Chennai and neighboring districts. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are gearing up for increased meteorological activities as ‘Miachaung’ approaches.

The current position of ‘Miachaung’ is 340 km southeast of Chennai, 470 km southeast of Nellore, and 580 km south-southeast of Andhra Pradesh’s Machilipatnam. The cyclonic storm is projected to intensify into a ‘cyclonic storm’ over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours, reaching the south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4.

South Central Railway (SCR) has announced the cancellation of 118 long-distance trains from December 3 to 7 due to cyclone Michaung. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Secretary, Shiv Das Meena, conducted a review of precautionary measures on Saturday, and the state government has deployed 100 teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for rescue and relief operations.
