The Election Commission has taken action against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by issuing a show-cause notice for sharing purportedly “defamatory and insulting” social media posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The notice, sent on Wednesday, requires AAP’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, to provide an explanation regarding the statements made in the contentious social media posts by Thursday.
The complaint leading to the notice was lodged by several BJP leaders who alleged that two posts shared by AAP on social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP’s “star campaigner,” in a manner that was deemed “disparaging, insulting, and defamatory.” The complaint asserted that the posts were shared with “malicious intent” to detrimentally impact the candidature of BJP leaders participating in elections.
The Election Commission’s intervention underscores the heightened sensitivity around social media content during election periods, emphasizing the need for parties to adhere to ethical and non-defamatory communication.
