Fairy Folk": Rasika Dugal's Enchanting Journey into Magic Realism in Indian Cinema

Rasika Dugal, a prominent face in Indian entertainment, is set to grace the screen in the upcoming film ‘Fairy Folk,’ directed by award-winning filmmaker Karan Gour. Scheduled for release on March 1, the film has garnered acclaim at international festivals and will now hit theaters in Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. Notably, this project marks Rasika’s first on-screen collaboration with her husband Mukul Chadda. ‘Fairy Folk’ explores human relationships through the lens of magic realism, providing the actors, including Rasika, the freedom to improvise. The film unfolds in a linear fashion, making it an “actor’s delight” as Rasika describes it. Working with her husband allowed for a seamless working rhythm, and the couple navigated the challenge of not discussing their characters’ thoughts to preserve the spontaneity of their performances. Rasika emphasizes the liberating nature of indie films for actors, providing a space for experimentation with new cinematic idioms. Produced collaboratively by Empatheia Films, Balawala Cinema, and Timbuktu Films, ‘Fairy Folk’ promises a unique cinematic experience, complemented by the director’s own background score.
