Ghulam Nabi Azad Stresses Caution in Implementing 'One Nation, One Election'

Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, a member of the committee exploring simultaneous elections, emphasized the need for thorough consultations before implementing the ‘one nation, one election’ concept. He stated that the initial meeting was introductory and cautioned against hasty decisions.

The government formed an eight-member panel, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, to examine the feasibility of simultaneous elections for various bodies, including the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Azad stressed the importance of seeking input from national, regional, and recognized political parties before reaching any decisions. He emphasized that the committee wouldn’t act unilaterally and would consider everyone’s opinions.

Regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, Azad acknowledged the delay of 30 years but praised political parties for supporting the legislation in both houses of Parliament.

Azad also discussed the delayed assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that elections are vital to democracy and must be held.
