As India grapples with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation recorded 702 new cases in a single day, bringing the total active cases to 4,097. This update was provided by the Union Health Ministry on December 28, 2023.
Tragically, the country also reported six new fatalities linked to the virus. The states affected by these recent deaths include Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, and Delhi. This data, compiled up to 8 a.m., underscores the continued threat of the virus despite previous declines in daily case numbers.
The recent surge in cases follows a period where daily infections had dwindled to double digits by December 5. However, concerns have resurfaced due to the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant and the onset of colder weather conditions, which traditionally facilitates the spread of respiratory illnesses.
Reflecting on the broader impact of the pandemic, India has witnessed over 4.5 crore infections and mourned the loss of more than 5.3 lakh lives since its onset in early 2020. Amid these sobering statistics, there is a glimmer of hope as over 4.4 crore individuals have successfully recovered from the virus, leading to a commendable national recovery rate of 98.81%.
In the nationwide vaccination effort, the Health Ministry reports an administration of 220.67 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses. However, there remains a disparity, as booster doses, a crucial aspect of long-term immunity, have been administered to less than 23 crore individuals.
