Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions during the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, focusing on handling the border issue between their countries. The talks took place amidst efforts to address tensions along the Line of Actual Control.
China’s Foreign Ministry revealed that President Xi emphasized the importance of both countries considering the broader interests of their bilateral relationship. He called for a careful and appropriate approach to managing the border issue. The meeting was reported to have been initiated by Prime Minister Modi, indicating India’s proactive stance in seeking dialogue to address concerns.
While the leaders engaged in discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, it was noted that the request for the conversation came from the Indian side. However, sources clarified that while India was open to an informal discussion, it declined a formal bilateral meeting that China had previously proposed.
Although the meeting was not publicly acknowledged initially, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra later confirmed that both leaders had agreed to intensify efforts towards troop disengagement and de-escalation of tensions along the Line of Actual Control. This indicates a mutual willingness to find common ground and work towards diffusing the situation. This brings me some sort of hope that we can put aside our hate and work together for a better cause.
