Intense monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in the northwestern regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall led to landslides, flash floods, and tragic loss of life. The overflowing Beas River prompted authorities to open the floodgates of the Pandoh Dam as a precautionary measure.
Numerous roads, including the Chandigarh-Manali and Bajaura-Kautala highways, were blocked due to waterlogging and landslides, causing significant disruptions. Flash floods swept away several vehicles, while houses and other structures suffered severe damage.
Over 200 people, mostly tourists, found themselves stranded near Baggi bridge in Mandi district. A 15-kilometer traffic jam ensued along the Mandi-Kullu highway due to landslides and blockages. Rescue operations are underway to clear the debris and evacuate the stranded individuals to safer areas. The State Disaster Management Authority reported 124 blocked roads in Himachal Pradesh.
As authorities continue their efforts to mitigate the impact of the monsoon season, the focus remains on providing relief, ensuring the safety of affected individuals, and minimizing further damage caused by the devastating weather conditions.
