'Pippa' Director Raja Menon Breaks Away from Jingoism, Embraces Realism in 1971 War Drama

In a recent interview, director Raja Menon opened up about his experience directing the highly anticipated 1971 India-Pakistan war drama, ‘Pippa.’ Menon expressed his gratitude to his team for supporting his commitment to creating a film that steers clear of jingoism. The film, starring Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli, among others, was released on Prime Video on November 10.

Director Raja Menon, renowned for films like ‘Chef’ and ‘Airlift,’ shared his belief that creating jingoistic films is a more straightforward task. He acknowledged the support of his team in maintaining the film’s authenticity and avoiding the bombastic and aggressive portrayal often associated with war dramas. Menon emphasized his dedication to telling a real and compelling story, appreciating the collaborative effort that allowed him to stick to his convictions.

Ishaan Khatter, who plays Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta in ‘Pippa,’ echoed Menon’s sentiments, highlighting the film’s focus on the human journey and righteousness without external bravado. Khatter expressed the emotional depth of portraying characters fighting for the liberation of others, distinguishing it from the typical chaos-inducing narratives seen in war films.

‘Pippa,’ also featuring Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Painyuli, premiered on Prime Video on November 10. As anticipation built ahead of Diwali, Mrunal, known for her roles in ‘Love Sonia,’ ‘Super 30,’ and ‘Jersey,’ shared her excitement for the film’s release. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, ‘Pippa’ offers audiences a genuine and unique perspective on the events of the 1971 war.
