Amidst the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, a new law that introduces harsh penalties for hit-and-run incidents, various states witnessed widespread protests from drivers and truckers voicing their discontent.
Maharashtra: In Maharashtra, truck drivers initiated “rasta roko” demonstrations against the new penal law. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in the Mira Bhayandar region saw traffic disruption as drivers pelted stones at police personnel, resulting in injuries and vehicle damage. Other districts like Solapur, Kolhapur, Nagpur, and Gondia also reported road blockades, while the situation in Navi Mumbai remained stable.
Chhattisgarh: Commercial vehicle operators in Chhattisgarh, particularly bus drivers, halted services and organized protests. The state witnessed a massive strike, with over 12,000 private bus drivers participating. This led to numerous commuters being stranded in cities like Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, and Rajnandgaon. Concerns also arose over potential fuel shortages, prompting residents to rush to petrol stations.
West Bengal: West Bengal observed demonstrations by truck and commercial vehicle drivers who blocked National Highway number 2 near Dankuni toll plaza. The blockade, which lasted for about two hours, disrupted traffic flow and required police intervention to restore order.
Punjab: The state of Punjab experienced a substantial reduction in commercial vehicle operations as drivers protested against the stringent hit-and-run law. Roads, including the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road in Moga and the Shambhu border near Ambala, witnessed blockades, affecting transportation.
Madhya Pradesh: Drivers in Madhya Pradesh took to the streets in cities like Bhopal and Indore, causing disruptions. In Bhopal, protesters halted city buses, while in Indore, buses were strategically parked at Gangwal bus stand. These actions led to road blockades and fuel supply concerns across the state.
The widespread protests highlight the deep-seated concerns among drivers regarding the new penal law’s implications and the urgent need for dialogue between stakeholders to address the grievances.
