The onset of the monsoon season in North Sikkim has brought along quite a few flash floods and landslides. Recent reports have highlighted the plight of thousands of tourists who were stranded in the region due to the adverse weather conditions. However, the authorities have now successfully rescued and evacuated these individuals.
Among the worst-affected areas in North Sikkim is Chungthang, located in the Mangan district. The district authorities have taken the decision to temporarily suspend the issuance of fresh tourist permits for the region until further notice. The landslides have caused significant harm to the main road, resulting in the stranding of approximately 2,464 tourists. Chungthang, situated at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers, is a scenic town that attracts nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those on spiritual journeys. It serves as a gateway to renowned destinations such as Yumthang Valley and Lachung, and its association with the patron saint of Sikkim, Guru Padmasambhava, adds to its spiritual significance.
While North Sikkim navigates through this challenging period, it is hoped that swift measures will be taken to restore the region’s infrastructure and ensure the safety of both residents and future visitors. The resilience and natural beauty of these areas will continue to draw tourists once the situation stabilizes and the necessary precautions are in place.
