Sriram Raghavan Discusses Merry Christmas, Its 'Clap-Worthy' Climax, and Unfair Andhadhun Comparisons

Renowned filmmaker Sriram Raghavan recently shared insights into his latest thriller, Merry Christmas, starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. Following the success of Andhadhun in 2018, Raghavan returned to cinema halls with this intriguing murder mystery.

In an interview, Raghavan expressed contentment with the overall positive response to Merry Christmas. Acknowledging that some viewers expected a pace similar to Andhadhun, he clarified that the deliberate pacing in the beginning was essential for a satisfying climax, which he believes has resonated well.

Unlike the fast-paced Andhadhun, Merry Christmas takes a slower approach, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in its atmosphere and intricate plot. Raghavan defended this choice, emphasizing the film’s theatrical experience over OTT platforms to ensure uninterrupted engagement.

The film unfolds over one night in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), with two strangers discovering each other. Raghavan noted that while some viewers sought a more intense and immediate experience, the film’s deliberate pacing was crucial to set the mood effectively.

Addressing the criticism of a “late” murder in Andhadhun, Raghavan shared an anecdote about initial feedback, where some suggested moving the murder scene earlier. He resisted the pressure, and the film went on to become a hit. Drawing parallels, he expressed satisfaction with Merry Christmas’s unique narrative choices.

The climax of Merry Christmas has received praise, with Raghavan mentioning the applause from audiences during cinema visits. Despite the varied responses, he finds the sound of applause “music to my ears.”

As Merry Christmas continues its run in theaters, Sriram Raghavan remains pleased with the film’s reception, embracing its distinctive style and narrative choices.
