The Supreme Court has declined an urgent hearing for Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra’s petition challenging her expulsion from the Lok Sabha. Moitra was ousted from the Lok Sabha on December 8 following the adoption of the Ethics Committee’s report, finding her guilty of accepting gifts and illegal gratification from businessman Darshan Hiranandani.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought an urgent listing of Moitra’s petition before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, suggesting Thursday or Friday. However, the CJI directed Singhvi to send an email for consideration, stating, “The matter may not have been registered. If an email was sent, I would look at it right away. Please send it. I’ll look at it.”
Earlier in the day, Singhvi approached a bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, who advised him to mention the case before the CJI for necessary directions.
Mahua Moitra’s legal counsel is pushing for an early listing of the case, given the Supreme Court’s upcoming winter vacation starting December 15.
On December 8, the Lok Sabha expelled Moitra based on the Ethics Committee’s findings, accusing her of accepting gifts and illegal gratification from Darshan Hiranandani to serve his interests. Moitra vehemently denies these allegations.
