Tabu Opens Up About Comedy Roles and Gender Stereotypes in Cinema

Veteran actress Tabu, set to star in Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Khufiya,” has highlighted the scarcity of comedy roles for women in the film industry. She noted the stark difference in the number of comedy films compared to other genres, resulting in fewer opportunities for actors in comedic roles, especially women.

Tabu shared her views during an interview with Galatta Plus, where she reflected on her role in “Jawani Jaaneman,” a film where she portrayed a ‘hippie mom’ and brought humor to the screen. She explained that the limited production of comedic films contributes to the fewer comedic roles for actors and that such characters, often written for women, are rare in both cinema and real life.

The acclaimed actress also emphasized the changing perception of women in comedy, acknowledging that many women now excel at making people laugh. Vishal Bhardwaj, the director of “Khufiya,” praised Tabu’s comedic talent, especially in delivering humor through anger.

“Khufiya” is set to premiere on Netflix on October 5, featuring Tabu, Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Azmeri Haque Badhon in prominent roles.
