In a devastating incident on Wednesday, a multi-vehicle collision on the Thoppur Ghat Road in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district resulted in the charred remains of four individuals, including three women. The accident, captured on CCTV, has circulated widely on social media, depicting a horrifying scene of vehicles piling up, leading to a car being trapped and engulfed in flames.
The collision occurred around 5:15 pm when a speeding truck collided with two other trucks and several cars while approaching the Thoppur Twin Bridge. The impact was so severe that a car became trapped under one of the trucks and caught fire, while another truck fell off the bridge. The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the Dharmapuri-Salem National Highway.
The victims were identified as M Manju (56), J Vimal (28), V Anushka (23), and V Jenifer (29), all belonging to the same family and residents of Town Hall, Coimbatore. The tragic incident has left eight others severely injured, currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Expressing condolences, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each deceased person and Rs 50,000 for each injured individual. The police reported that the truck initiating the collision was loaded with paddy and headed to Salem. The injured truck driver, yet to regain consciousness, is receiving treatment. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rash driving, causing hurt due to negligence, and causing death by negligence.
