Trinamool Congress Reinforces Support for Mahua Moitra Amidst Controversy

Amid the ongoing cash-for-query controversy in Parliament, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has unequivocally reaffirmed its backing of Mahua Moitra, the Krishnanagar MP. The party, acknowledging her organizational acumen, has entrusted her with the responsibility of fortifying its presence in the Nadia (Krishnanagar) district unit. This strategic move comes as a response to the recent recommendation by the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee for Moitra’s expulsion.

Moitra expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am very happy that my party has entrusted me with this responsibility in an election year. Booth workers are of utmost importance to me; they are the backbone of the party.” Addressing the allegations against her, she maintained, “It is the BJP’s propaganda and rumour-mongering at its best. I have always maintained that the TMC is a party with organizational strength, and we do not need to shout from the rooftop just because the BJP spread this.”

Moitra’s reappointment reflects the TMC’s commitment to addressing factionalism within the party, particularly in Nadia, where it lacks senior leadership. With veteran leaders facing health issues and legal troubles, Moitra’s organizational skills are seen as essential for bringing stability.

The recent decision also follows comments by Abhishek Banerjee, TMC’s second-in-command, who broke the silence on the allegations against Moitra. He remarked, “I feel Mahua is competent enough to fight her battles on her own. They have been victimizing me for four years too; it is their standard practice.”

Despite the Ethics Committee’s recommendation for expulsion, Moitra remains a key figure for the TMC, evident in the revised list of district presidents. This move signals that the TMC continues to stand by Moitra, emphasizing its trust in her leadership. As the party prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Moitra’s role in Krishnanagar remains pivotal.
