Vijayakant: From Film Stardom to Political Impact in Tamil Nadu's Landscape

Vijayakant, a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu’s political and cinematic spheres, passed away at the age of 71. Known for his significant role in altering the state’s political dynamics, he succumbed to health complications exacerbated by a recent COVID-19 diagnosis.

Born Vijayaraj in Madurai, Vijayakant rose to fame in the Tamil film industry, commonly referred to as Kollywood. Early in his career, he distinguished himself in an era dominated by cinematic legends like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. His portrayal in the blockbuster “Captain Prabakaran” earned him the endearing title of ‘Captain’ among fans.

Beyond his cinematic achievements, Vijayakant carved a niche in politics, establishing the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) party. Notably, he was one of the few film personalities, alongside MGR, to make a significant impact in the political arena, challenging the established dominance of parties like DMK and AIADMK. His political journey witnessed notable milestones, including his role as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

However, Vijayakant’s political trajectory was not without challenges. Despite initial success and the title ‘Puratchi Kalaignar’ (Revolutionary Artist) bestowed upon him, his party faced internal rifts and dwindling electoral fortunes over time.

The relationship between Vijayakant and key political figures like Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi was characterized by both collaboration and contention. While he shared a rapport with several leaders, political decisions, such as the demolition of his marriage hall during the DMK regime, influenced his alliances and strategies.

In recent years, Vijayakant’s declining health restricted his public appearances, with frequent hospital visits both domestically and internationally. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with Tamil Nadu’s socio-political narrative.
